چکیده

The paper addresses the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of the turbulent wake of the Ahmed car model. To this endwe use a Fourier-Chebyshevmulti-domain solver and the LES capability is implemented through the use of the Spectral Vanishing Viscosity (SVV) method, completed with a near-wall correction. A “pseudo-penalization” technique is used to model the bluff body. Comparisons of the present SVV-LES results with the experiments and also with a more classical Finite Volume LES are provided. Spectral Vanishing Viscosity Method for High-order Les : Computation of the Dissipation Rates

The spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV) method has recently appeared of interest for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows. Here we show that the SVV-LES approach allows to easily compute turbulent quantities, like the dissipation rates of the turbulent kinetic energy or of the variance of a passive scalar and to clearly discern the subgrid and viscous contributions. Results obtaine...

From stratified wakes to rotor–stator flows by an SVV–LES method

We extend a large-eddy simulation (LES) methodology, based on using the spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV) method to stabilize spectral collocation approximations, from the Cartesian to the cylindrical geometry. The capabilities of the SVV–LES approach are illustrated for two very different physical problems: (1) the influence of thermal stratification on the wake of a cylinder, and (2) the ins...

Spectral vanishing viscosity method for LES: sensitivity to the SVV control parameters

Where spectral methods are concerned, the spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV) method offers an interesting way of computing high Reynolds number flows since it allows stabilization of the calculations whilst preserving the exponential rate of convergence of the spectral approximation. Here we first show how to implement the SVV method in an existing Navier–Stokes solver and then investigate the ...

A spectral vanishing viscosity for the LES of turbulent flows within rotating cavities

A spectral vanishing viscosity technique (SVV) is presented for the simulation of 3D turbulent incompressible flows within a rotor–stator cavity. One characteristic of this technique is that the SVV is active only for the short length scales, a feature which is reminiscent of Large Eddy Simulation models. The Spectral Vanishing Viscosity, first introduced by E. Tadmor for the inviscid Burgers e...

Viscous stabilizations for high order approximations of Saint-Venant and Boussinesq flows

Two viscous stabilization methods, namely the spectral vanishing viscosity (SVV) technique and the entropy viscosity method (EVM), are applied to flows of interest in geophysics. First, following a study restricted to one space dimension [17], the spectral element approximation of the shallow water equations is stabilized using the EVM. Our recent advances are here carefully described. Second, ...
